Your first night in Fukuoka: dinner by the river

01Choose an area

Yatai are small, temporary food stalls. Nakasu and Tenjin are two well-known areas for them. If you would like riverside scenery with dinner, consider Nakasu; otherwise start with whichever area makes sense for your hotel.

Use the official yatai guide below to choose a stall. Food, opening days and seating vary from place to place.

02At the stall

• Wait for the owner to show you a seat; space is shared.
• Read the menu and prices, then order clearly.
• Fukuoka’s visitor guide recommends a drink and a dish per person.
• Bring cash, as many stalls do not take cards.
• Finish your meal without lingering when other people are waiting.

Ramen and grilled skewers are among the foods you may find. Check the stall’s menu rather than expecting every stall to serve the same dishes.

03A simple first evening

1. Check the weather.Stalls may close in poor weather. Choose an indoor restaurant as a fallback before you leave.
2. Make one stall your dinner stop.Travel light so that bags do not take up another guest’s space.
3. Enjoy the waterfront if conditions suit.Leave time for the journey home and skip the walk if you are tired or the weather worsens.

04Getting home

Check your route on the Fukuoka City Subway website, including the station, direction and departure time you need. A general operating window is not the same as the last useful service to your destination.
