Choose a stall before joining the queue

Use Fukuoka’s official yatai guide to find a stall and see its food and location. Menus differ, so choose for the dish you want rather than assuming every stall serves the same selection.

Look at posted prices and ordering guidance before sitting down. If anything about the menu or charges is unclear, ask the owner while you still have the option to choose somewhere else.

Wait for the owner to seat you

The city’s yatai guidance emphasises shared space and considerate use of limited seats. Travel light, wait for the owner’s direction and keep your bag out of another guest’s place.

For a larger group, discuss whether everyone needs to sit together. A small stall may be less convenient than an indoor restaurant if that is essential to your evening.

Order and pay clearly

The official guide recommends a drink and a dish per person and notes that many stalls require cash. Have a usable payment option ready before ordering, and ask about the total if you are uncertain.

Start with a clear, manageable order. If you would like to photograph the owner or neighbouring guests, ask first. Friendly conversation is welcome when it happens naturally, but nobody needs to perform for your camera.

Enjoy the meal, then make room

Once you have finished, settle the bill and avoid occupying scarce seats while others wait. You can continue your conversation on a considerate walk away from the stall.

Stalls may not open in bad weather or for other reasons. Check current information and choose an indoor backup before leaving your hotel, so a closed stall does not mean starting your dinner search from scratch.

Quick questions

Can I rely on paying by card?
Ask the stall directly and bring cash as a backup. Payment methods are not the same at every yatai.
