Decide how fixed your plan is
If dinner is the main event of your day, contact the restaurant or use the booking method linked from its own website. Confirm whether it takes reservations and whether your preferred time is available.
If you are arriving from an airport or another city, allow for the journey, check-in and a little time to settle. An ambitious reservation immediately after landing can create unnecessary pressure.
Check the conditions before confirming
Read the date, local time, party size and cancellation terms. Confirm any deposit, course requirement or seating limit before committing. These are details of the individual restaurant, not universal rules for eating in Japan.
Tell the restaurant about an important request before booking rather than assuming it can be resolved at the table. Keep its response together with your confirmation so you can refer to the same information later.
Save the details that get you there
Keep the booking name, contact method, full address, building and floor. A map pin is useful, but it may lead to a complex with several restaurants inside.
Plan the route so you arrive with time to find the entrance. If you will be delayed, contact the restaurant through the agreed channel as early as you can and ask what options remain.
Keep a walk-in plan realistic
For a flexible meal, choose two nearby candidates and check their menus and opening information. A walk-in plan means you can adapt, not that a seat is guaranteed when you arrive.
If you visit a small food alley or a yatai, be prepared for limited shared seating. You can choose a larger indoor restaurant if sitting together or spending longer over dinner is the priority.
